Impact on health and the economy
Biodiversity and the complexity of marine and terrestrial landscapes are the foundation of economic, social and ecological stability. (UNEP – Preventing The Next Pandemic, 2020)

People believe that although industrialized agriculture and stock raising can have environmental consequences and promote violence against animals, it is the most financially effective way to have food.
Reality is far from that. Greenhouse gas emissions, air pollution and wildlife loss can cost up to $ 3 trillion a year.
This industry does not provide transparency regarding external costs such as those needed for water purification and treatment of diseases arising from its methods. Communities and taxpayers are likely to pay these costs without knowing it.
As the human population grows, so does the pressure to find a solution to the ten billion mouths that are expected to be fed by 2050. A report by 30 scientists in the British medical journal The Lancet, suggests to governments, that turning to a plant-based diet as a viable solution.
The economic benefits of a plant-based diet can be as high as $ 1 billion a year, which today are spent on the health care system or lost on recovery days and unpaid care. The economic value that society places on reducing the risk of death can be up to 9-13% of the global GTP, which corresponds to 20-30 trillion dollars. Finally, the economic benefits of reduced greenhouse gas emissions that a shift to veganism will cause, could reach $570 billion.
Studies show that in scenarios in which people adopt a vegetarian diet, up to 7.3 million deaths can be avoided by 2050, while with a vegan diet this number rises to 8.1 million. About half of the deaths that will be avoided are due to reduced red meat eating. The other half, will be due to the combination of increased fruits and vegetables in the diet. Fewer calories mean less obese people.(Sprinhgmann et al 2016).
